Kelowna Multi-Family Infill
Type:      Infill Residential, Missing Middle, Multi-Family

The Living Yard infill development aims to improve Kelowna’s suburban districts by bringing together community members in diverse, social, and resilient spaces. A central courtyard forms the backbone of the community by giving space for social, environmental, and vehicular
infrastructure.

The design is inspired by the Dutch urban planning concept Woonerf which means “living street.” Woonerf streets allow spaces to be shared between pedestrians, cyclists, and
vehicles while their design focuses on creating quality environments that are pleasant and safe for all.

Our design seeks to reclaim and activate spaces typically reserved for only vehicles byprogramming multi-functional exterior spaces that populate the courtyard. The design maximizes the amount of outdoor livable space by giving
multiple purposes to the vehicle infrastructure.
The Living Yard project seeks to transform Kelowna’s car oriented suburbs into vibrant and inclusive spaces by challenging notions that people and cars should not mix. Instead, vibrancy and inclusivity are enhanced by providing spaces for everyone.
